Gorton District Centre
Plans to regenerate Gorton district centre are now well underway and in October 07 work is due to start on the construction of a large Tesco Extra store that will sit within the 3.5 acre site. The new supermarket will create a number of job opportunities for people in the area as well as creating a convenient place for local people to shop.
Work has now started to renovate the former Co-operative building into a £1.7 million market hall. The building will create 25,000 sq ft of retail space, enough to accommodate 74 stalls along with a purpose built shop unit for the chemist.
New East Manchester has also been working closely with GVA Grimley on proposals to impact the whole centre, which include:
- A scheme of urban realm and traffic improvements
- Refurbishment of existing buildings
- Reclamation and redevelopment of derelict sites
- To reserve a site for a new health centre
