Two development plans for East Manchester

Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) on land in two east Manchester districts have now been approved by Manchester City Council, enabling the neighbourhood plans to take a major step forward.

Following lengthy consultation with local residents, New East Manchester Ltd considered it necessary to acquire land for redevelopment in both the Toxteth Street area of Openshaw and the Eccleshall Street area of Clayton to allow for new housing schemes that would assist in the regeneration of the area.

Tom Russell, Chief Executive of New East Manchester said: “This is really good news. Residents in both these areas have been waiting a long time for us to get to this stage. Now permission to acquire this land for redevelopment has been granted we can move forward in the renewal process, bringing social, economic and environmental improvements to the area.  Although CPOs are not always the answer, in both these cases they are needed to ensure we can bring lasting benefits to these communities.”

Manchester City Council’s executive member for housing, Cllr Eddy Newman, said:

“This development is a major step forward in improving the quality of life for people in these neighbourhoods. The work we will be carrying out here is an essential part of our efforts to revitalise and breathe new life into communities.”

National housebuilder, Lovell, is working with New East Manchester to redevelop nearly 25.5 acres (10.3 hecatres) in the Toxteth Street neighbourhood, which is currently predominately residential and contains no buildings of historic or architectural significance.

The Eccleshall Street neighbourhood is currently a mix of commercial and residential. New City Vision is the preferred developer, who will deliver the neighbourhood plan.
