New parade created for Beswick shops
As part of the on-going development work to create a new shopping centre for Beswick, the supermarket has reopened after being closed for a few weeks for refurbishment.
The new-look Beswick supermarket will be part of a new parade of shops, which will include the post office and chemist that are being temporarily relocated just 220 yards away from their existing location.
The post office and chemist will move to the new site in late August once a new frontage onto Windcroft Close, opposite Grey Mare Lane police station, has been built, with separate entrances to all three units, creating a small shopping parade.
This will allow for demolition of the existing units which will make room for further construction of the new East Manchester Academy complex where is building work is now well under-way.
Eddie Smith, chief executive of New East Manchester said: "Our priority is to keep these essential services open and easily accessible for local people while the work on the district centre continues. We've come up with this temporary solution which means these shops remain in the same location which avoids any inconvenience for the community. The new outlets will offer disabled access and allow residents to continue to do their local shopping all in one place."
Chris Varnava, owner of the Beswick supermarket said: "I've been working closely with New East Manchester and the City Council to ensure an adequate retail offer is maintained for the people of Beswick. It's been a lot of hard work and I'm really glad we've pulled it off. It's been a real team effort to come up with this solution. I want to thank New East Manchester and the City Council for their continued commitment to the area."
The long-term plan is for the shops to be permanently located in new purpose-built units fronting Grey Mare Lane once other building work is complete.
