New construction training centre opens

A new east Manchester training centre running courses in plastering, kitchen and bathroom fitting, carpentry, joinery and groundwork is now open.

The centre offers hands-on training in a realistic working environment and aims to equip learners with the skills to secure employment in the construction industry.

The centre is a partnership between the urban regeneration company New East Manchester, The Manchester College and Manchester Solutions Ltd, and is funded by the North West Development Agency and New Deal for Communities.

Eddie Smith, Chief Executive of New East Manchester, said: “We are very excited about the future of the east Manchester construction training centre and hope that over the years to come, residents from across east Manchester will take the opportunity to benefit from the courses on offer and develop their careers in the construction industry.”

Peter Tavernor, Principal of The Manchester College, said: “The Manchester College is one of the region's leading construction training providers. We are always looking for new ways to improve levels of participation in training and this community-based centre is an ideal way of doing just that.

“By working closely with employers we will make sure that the skills we teach are the ones that the construction industry needs the most, all within a welcoming, non-intimidating environment."

Courses last from eight to 16 weeks and welcome men and women from across east Manchester, catering for varying skill levels from the complete beginner to the ‘industry returners’ needing to brush up on their skills.
