Monastery marks last mass on 20th anniversary of closure

On Thursday (26 November), The Monastery, Manchester will mark the 20th anniversary of the last mass that took place on 26 November 1989 on the day the church closed for the last time. The building will be open to the public from 10am to 4pm and a screening of the final service will be shown at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

Hundreds of people packed into the church to hear the last sermon given by Father Guardian Ronald before Gorton Monastery shut its doors for the last time. The Friars Pantry will be open, serving lunch and refreshments.

Also, on Sunday 29 November, the film of the last mass will also be shown at 12.30pm and 2.30pm with a short blessing at 3.30pm to give thanks for building being saved and hopes for its future.

Elaine Griffiths, chief executive of The Monastery, Manchester said: "We couldn't let this date pass without marking it in a special way. This is an opportunity to walk back in time and remember what the church was like in all its glory. We want to welcome back any of the hundreds of people who were there at the mass 20 years ago so they can share this special day with us. This is also a chance for anyone who hasn't already been to the newly restored building to see for themselves how it now looks today."
