East Manchester students first to get regen qualification

Four East Manchester residents have become the first people in the country to gain a formal qualification in regeneration called 'Working in the Community'. Gina Twigg from Newton Heath, Nick Buckley from Openshaw, Sarah Armitt from Abbey Hey and Susan Robinson from Gorton were all appointed as regeneration assistants with New East Manchester (NEM) and New Deal for Communities (NDC) twelve months ago.

The aim of the Regeneration Assistants project is to provide local residents with the opportunity to gain employment and follow a career path in regeneration. All four apprentices will now complete their second and final year through an on-going structured, accredited training programme combined with work-based learning and experience.

This qualification has been developed in partnership with Greater Manchester Open College Network (GMOCN) and delivered by Salford Adult Education, who, for some time, have recognised that existing qualifications in regeneration do not reflect the nature of many programmes and in particular the community led approach to activity.

Sean McGonigle, NDC Coordinator said: "These four people have worked really hard over the past year and thoroughly deserve this qualification. To have the first people to qualify in the UK right here in East Manchester is fantastic news and to have regeneration recognised in this way marks a major milestone and a great endorsement for the profession. We have high hopes that all four will progress onto a successful career in regeneration. I hope more people around the country will consider participating in the course."

Three of the four students are now studying part-time for as degree in regeneration. The three-year foundation degree in Neighbourhood Renewal is run by Salford University.
