£10 million community hub plans unveiled for Miles Platting

Plans for a new £10 million community hub in Miles Platting, east Manchester have been unveiled in advance of a report going to Manchester City Council's Executive committee on 22 July.

Included in the first phase of the scheme will be a Joint Service Centre containing a health centre and library along with information and advice services, adult education, a pharmacy and services for young people. A new housing office will also be provided, together with retail facilities including a convenience store incorporating a post office.

Located in a prominent location on the corner of Varley Street and Oldam Road, the community hub will also provide a new car park and access road to the range of facilities within the hub

The community hub is within the £200 million regeneration scheme for Miles Platting which is part funded through a private finance initiative (PFI), that will see the refurbishment of over 1,500 council properties and the construction of approximately 1,000 new family houses and apartments. The Joint Service Centre is funded separately by Manchester City Council and NHS Manchester together with support from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

The regeneration programme is being carried out by the Renaissance Consortium - which is made up of housing regeneration specialist Lovell, Adactus Housing Association and Investors in the Community - on behalf of Manchester City Council and New East Manchester.

Eddie Smith, Chief Executive of New East Manchester said: "This community hub will significantly improve the standard of amenities in the area and contribute to our vision of developing Miles Platting into a popular neighbourhood for both local residents and people considering relocating here. The range of services provided will, we hope, make a noticeable impact on residents living longer, happier and healthier lives."

Councillor Paul Andrews, Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services at Manchester City Council said: "The Joint Service Centre is an important part of the regeneration plans for Miles Platting and will provide a much-needed new facility for this area offering essential services to help improve people's lives. Our aspiration is also to create a new sports facility including a new swimming pool. Until we can secure these facilities, the existing Miles Platting pool will remain open for public use."
Laura Roberts, Chief Executive of NHS Manchester said: "The Joint Service Centre is excellent news and will provide the people of Miles Platting and Newton Health with convenient and modern healthcare facilities. NHS Manchester is committed to supporting regeneration and we look forward to this scheme going from strength to strength."

If the plans are approved by the Council's Executive, work is expected to start by summer 2010 with completion in late 2011.

PRP Architects are the masterplanners for the scheme and MBLA are the architects for the Joint Service Centre.
