Work starts today on the new £35m Divisional Headquarters for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) at Central Park in Newton Heath in east Manchester, just one and a half miles from Manchester city centre. It will be built next to GMP’s 240,000 sq ft Force Headquarters, which is currently under construction.

As part of a major review of the ten-year New Deal for Communities (NDC) 'Beacons for a Brighter Future' regeneration programme in east Manchester, a series of open discussions will take place next month to gather views from local east Manchester residents on its impact.
In 1999 the neighbourhoods of Beswick, Openshaw and Clayton were selected to participate in NDC, one of the UK’s biggest regeneration programmes and a key Government strategy to tackle social exclusion and bridge the gap between the poorest neighbourhoods and the rest of the country.

14/12/09 Places available on free stand-up comedy course
Sixteen places are available on a free comedy course for east Manchester residents, funded by urban regeneration company, New East Manchester.
Now in its fourth year, the new course starts on 4 January and will run every Monday evening for 12 weeks at the Manchester Velodrome in Clayton.
The course, set up and run by comedian Ashley Boroda, provides a step-by-step guide to becoming a stand-up comedian, from writing material to microphone technique. Students will also learn to source material, study comedic styles, and learn performance and confidence-building skills.

14/12/09 Ancoats theatre supplier wins £10k business award
Wigs up North, a supplier of wigs and make-up for theatre and TV, based in Royal Mills in Ancoats, scooped a £10,000 EnterPrize business award at a ceremony at Gorton Monastery in east Manchester.
They were presented with the award by North West entrepreneur of the year and local man, Scott Fletcher who founded ANS Group, a leading IT and Telecoms solutions provider, in 1996 when he was just 22.

24/11/09 Ancoats public realm wins national urban design award
The public realm works in Ancoats, east Manchester, have won the Landscape Institute’s Urban Design and Master Planning 2009 Award. The award recognises the significant improvements made to the area including the renewal of the streets and pavements, as well as the introduction of the Peeps art installation and Cutting Room Square, a new public square in Ancoats, that opened in June this year.

23/11/09 Monastery marks last mass on 20th anniversary of closure
On Thursday (26 November), The Monastery, Manchester will mark the 20th anniversary of the last mass that took place on 26 November 1989 on the day the church closed for the last time. The building will be open to the public from 10am to 4pm and a screening of the final service will be shown at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

A year of celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of Gorton becoming a part of Manchester will culminate on Sunday 6 December with a grand festive finale at the Monastery, Manchester.

23/11/09 Work starts on £40 million east Manchester retail development
A ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start on site of the first phase of the development of the new Openshaw district centre, which will be anchored by an 80,000 sq ft Morrisons store, took place today. Luke Murphy and Kate Weir, both aged 10 years, from St Clement’s RC Primary School in Openshaw joined other VIPs including representatives from the City Council, New East Manchester, Dransfield Properties and Morrisons to cut the first sod of turf.

New East Manchester and Manchester City Council have welcomed news that three east Manchester housing schemes have received a boost totalling nearly £8 million.

26/10/09 New Beswick shopping parade completed
Work is complete on a new temporary parade of shops in Beswick, which includes the Beswick supermarket and the post office and chemist, which have been relocated just yards away from their former location.
This will allow for demolition of the existing units which will make room for further construction of the new East Manchester Academy, ready for opening in September 2010.

14/10/09 Students battle it out in the kitchen
Students from Cedar Mount High School were given the chance to work alongside top industry chefs in an F word style cookery competition last week.
Split into two teams, the teenagers joined Hilton Head Chef David Gale and Des Norton from The Manchester College as they battled it out in the kitchen to cook the best three course lunch.
More than 30 invited guests including a number of other pupils from the school attended the two-hour contest which took place on 6 October at The Manchester College campus in Openshaw, with each given £20 in fake money to spend on the food.

Fine Lady Bakeries, a family owned company based in Banbury in Oxfordshire, has selected Central Park in Newton Heath, east Manchester as its preferred location for its northern base.
Planning permission has been submitted for a £20 million bakery to be located as part of a 20 acre industrial development site off Briscoe Lane, which will eventually bring up to 250 jobs to Newton Heath.

Children from primary schools across east Manchester helped Guy Hutchence, Principal Designate for the new East Manchester Academy, bury a time capsule under the new school building on Grey Mare Lane in Beswick on Friday 9 October (at 1.30pm). The UK’s leading bakery retailer today officially opened its new factory in Openshaw, east Manchester.
The 750,000 sq ft building on Greenside Street off Ashton Old Road employs 220 people. Serving approximately 150 shops in the North West, each week the bakery produces a range of confectionary products including 85,000 doughnuts and distributes 200,000 pasties and 300,000 sausage rolls.

Food lovers and cooking enthusiasts are being treated to dozens of events this October as part of East Manchester’s Food and Drink Fringe Festival.

Four thousands of people attended the 7th annual summer Party in the Park event at Philips Park in Clayton in east Manchester on Sunday 2 August.

A unique urban public art work in east Manchester entitled, The Peeps, is to go on display to the public for the first time today (3 September).
