Manchester Location
Manchester is located in the North West of England. The city lies at the heart of the country, situated approximately halfway between the nation's capital, London, and the Scottish border.
The North West
Manchester's strategic location allows it easy access to a number of the largest cities in the north. Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool and Chester can all be reached within 45 minutes from the city centre, allowing economic and social geographical mobility. Travel between the cities is highly efficient with the M62 Motorway that runs directly from Liverpool to Manchester, following on to Leeds.
Manchester is perfectly situated for access to two of the most important motorways in the country. The M6 Motorway can be reached from Manchester providing a direct route to Birmingham in the South, or Cumbria in the North. The M1, runs directly to London, and is again easily accessible from Manchester allowing excellent access to the UK's capital city.
Manchester is dissected by various canals, the most famous of which is the Manchester Ship Canal. The 36 mile-long canal runs from Eastham, near Liverpool, to Manchester and was first opened in 1894. Manchester's canal system provides direct routes to a large number of places in the north including Liverpool, Wigan, Stoke on Trent and Huddersfield. The canals were a major catalyst in the city's development, enabling easy transportation of goods in and out of the city.
Although the canals are no longer used commercially, they are still a major feature in the city.

Where we are
East Manchester is located directly east of Manchester city centre, with the west boundary lying on Great Ancoats Street and the most easterly border with Droylsden in Tameside. In the north, East Manchester includes Newton Heath and stretches down to Gorton in the South.
The area is served by four major arterial roads all with good access to the Manchester Orbital motorway - the M60:
- Oldham Road (A62) is a direct route from Manchester to Oldham with junction access to the M60
- Ashton New Road (A662) and Ashton Old Road (A635) provide direct routes to Ashton with junction access to the M60
- Hyde Road (A57) provides a direct route from Manchester through to Denton and its junction with the M60
The inner ring road (A665 ) and Mancunian Way (A57M) run directly across the western perimeter of east Manchester, providing easy access to the city centre and surrounding areas.
