Impact of New East Manchester

New East Manchester Ltd was formed with the specific remit of bringing together public agencies and other bodies to tackle the social and economic problems that have plagued the area and is responsible for delivering a long term strategic vision for physical, social and economic change in East Manchester. The scale of renewal and regeneration required in the area is formidable. Major projects and initiatives are now in place to ensure that change will happen and stimulate the necessary economic and social growth.

Five years on and much of what is planned is well underway and will result in the East Manchester area becoming a flagship for the rest of the country. With this in mind New East Manchester has commissioned a third-party evaluation of corporate performance and achievements. This report will be available mid-summer 2006.

Economic Impact

  • Reduction in unemployment rate from 14.2% (Jan 1998) to 5.7% (January 2007)
  • House prices have risen by 108% since 2000
  • Successful recruitment campaigns with ASDA, Matalan and Next, employing  218, 51and 41 local people respectively
  • Over 1,200 local companies supported by local business advisors
  • Intensive Support Project established to support the hardest to reach clients – case load of 746 clients with 194 gaining jobs and 289 entering training
  • Aspire Recruitment Partnership – social employment agency established. Working with over 330 local people and creating 200 jobs.

Impact on Resident Perception

  • In July 2005, 68% residents said that they were either satisfied or very satisfied with the neighbourhood, compared to 46% in June 1999
  • Similarly in 2005, 60% of residents stated that the neighbourhood is getting better compared to 17% who thought this was the case in 1999
  • In 1999 53% of residents stated that they felt less safe now than two years ago. In 2005 this had fallen to 15%
  • The proportion with plans to move has fallen from 35% in 1999 to 26% in 2002. When asked why they wanted to move, in both 1999 and 2002 the main response given was the wish to move to a better area, this has fallen from 24% in 1999 to 7% in 2005

Progress to Date

  • In excess of 750,000 sq ft of new business floor-space completed and occupied
  • Over 3000 jobs created/safeguarded
  • 3500 units of new housing for sale will be completed or under construction to the end of 2005
  • Sales of over 700+ new homes
  • 1400+ further homes in the pipline
  • Two new primary schools
  • Regional Area and Vistor Centre at Sportcity
  • Ashton Canal Corridor comprehensive improvement programme
  • Transport Interchange
