Sustainable Regeneration in east Manchester

Once the heart of the industrial revolution, East Manchester  was the centre of the manufacturing industry on which the whole of the city’s wealth was based. Since the early 1970’s east Manchester has experienced extensive social, economic and physical decline as those industries have contracted and in many cases disappeared. Vacant houses, under used open spaces and poor quality industrial sites had become characteristic of the area. By the 1990s parts of east Manchester were recognised as some of the most deprived areas in the country.
