The Vision - Beswick
Since the original Strategic Regeneration Framework was published in 1999, the southern half of Beswick has undergone substantial redevelopment as part of a major regeneration programme with this revitalisation continuing today.
North of Albert Street a mixture of housing renewal and refurbishment is underway to stabilise and improve the neighbourhood. New housing should be developed on vacant sites in the neighbourhood through sensitive infill and should extend the grid street pattern where possible to improve connectivity.
To the west of Grey Mare Lane, the location of a new Academy is a key move in expanding East Manchester’s educational offer. South of this, a high-quality landscaped east/west street should be created to improve connections with the Openshaw neighbourhood and over the existing pedestrian crossing to Medlock Valley in the west.
To the west of Alan Turing Way, land is prioritised for mixed residential-commercial development, which will capitalise on the prominent location of these areas and their proximity to the sports and entertainment facilities associated with Sportcity, in order to contribute to the development of a robust, quality employment corridor along Alan Turing Way.
To enhance the image of the area to passing traffic, environmental improvements should continue to be made along Ashton New Road, Alan Turing Way and Ashton Old Road. These should be aimed at improving the pedestrian environment, increasing the ease with which pedestrians can cross at junctions and greening the corridors over the long term.
