Evolution of Openshaw West
Openshaw West is a mixture of residential properties and commercial properties. The area is in need of a neighbourhood plan to look at existing land uses and to develop a long-term vision for improving housing, the environment, retail, community and leisure facilities for the people who live and work in the neighbourhood.
In August 2005 Redrow Homes NW Ltd was appointed as the preferred development partner for the Openshaw West neighbourhood and in April 06 they appointed Taylor Young as the masterplanners.
The partners are now working with New East Manchester to develop a number of masterplanning options. Once these options have been further developed, consultation with residents will commence. Work carried out so far on the plan has enabled the Housing Market Renewal Team to identify priority areas for improvement so that strategies can be implemented ahead of the creation of the plan.
Improvements to traffic management along Parkhouse Street and Clayton Lane have been successfully completed and 24 new housing association homes were recently constructed by Rowlinson’s Construction Ltd in the Galston St area of the neighbourhood.
The English Cities Fund is also currently looking at proposals for a business park development around Alan Turing Way. Meanwhile, Harrow Estates are developing proposals for the redevelopment of the CIBA site, following its closure in 2008.
Population
The population of Openshaw West is 1,711 people living in 1,051 residences.
