Openshaw West

Openshaw West is part of the wider geographical area of Openshaw and is located between Alan Turing Way to the West and a former branch of the Ashton canal to the East.  It is bounded to the South by Ashton Old Road and the Ashton Canal to the North.

Located at the heart of east Manchester, Openshaw West benefits from all of the facilities and amenities from the surrounding neighbourhoods. These include Sportcity, Philips Park as well as the proposed new District Centre for Openshaw.

Openshaw is also home to the east Manchester campus for the Manchester College of Arts and Technology which offers students a wide range of courses including catering, construction as well as art and design.

Leisure

Openshaw West has great access to Openshaw Park, which has undergone significant improvements and includes two children’s play areas: one for children under five years old and the other for children over five. The park also contains excellent sporting facilities with a football pitch marked out during the summer months and a tennis court available for public use.

Sportcity offers residents access a wide range of world-class sporting facilities including the National Squash Centre, Regional Tennis Centre, National Cycling Centre, indoor and outdoor running track, state-of-the-art fitness suite and the English Institute of Sport. All of these facilities can be used by the local community, as well as being used by some of the country’s top athletes.

The proposed £40m retail facility in Openshaw will provide residents with 13 new retail units, varying in size, as well as a brand new supermarket alongside a state-of-the-art leisure and fitness centre.

Evolution of Openshaw West

Openshaw West is a mixture of residential properties and commercial properties. The area is in need of a neighbourhood plan to look at existing land uses and to develop a long-term vision for improving housing, the environment, retail, community and leisure facilities for the people who live and work in the neighbourhood.

In August 2005 Redrow Homes NW Ltd was appointed as the preferred development partner for the Openshaw West neighbourhood and in April 06 they appointed Taylor Young as the masterplanners.

The partners are now working with New East Manchester to develop a number of masterplanning options. Once these options have been further developed, consultation with residents will commence. Work carried out so far on the plan has enabled the Housing Market Renewal Team to identify priority areas for improvement so that strategies can be implemented ahead of the creation of the plan.

Improvements to traffic management along Parkhouse Street and Clayton Lane have been successfully completed.

A planning application has been submitted to the City Council in December 06 by Mosscare Housing Association and Rowlinson’s Construction Ltd for a mixed tenure-housing scheme of 57 properties around the Galston Street area.

The English Cities Fund is also currently looking at proposals for a business park development around Alan Turing Way. Meanwhile, Harrow Estates are developing proposals for the redevelopment of the CIBA site, following its closure in 2008.

Population

The population of Openshaw West is 1,711 people living in 1,051 residences.
