The Vision - Clayton General
The Clayton neighbourhood should continue to function as primarily a family-oriented residential area, though a mixture of housing renewal will be required along the western edge towards Bank Street and south of Ashton New Road on either side of the canal.
New housing should be developed on existing vacant sites across the neighbourhood through sensitive infill and should seek to extend the grid street pattern where possible to promote greater connectivity.
In order to support the investment in Metrolink, higher density development should be focused around stations. This creates an opportunity for a new and interesting urban development at the junction of the Ashton Canal and the Ashton New Road corridor that can build on the City’s tradition of high-quality, canal-side development and support the emerging entertainment, retail and recreation cluster at Sportcity.
A Retail High Street management strategy should be implemented along Ashton New Road between Transvaal and Charles Street, straddling the junction of Ashton New Road and Edge Lane - in partnership with Tameside MBC.
The strategy should be to undertake a series of physical improvements aimed at enhancing the image of the area and actively working to manage the retail offer. High-quality housing development to the south of the Ashton New Road and Edge Lane junction will also help to support these actions.
To facilitate housing renewal along the canal corridor a series of new connections should be provided from Ashton New Road to south of the canal. These would include the extension of Canberra and Schofield Streets south, as well as a new pedestrian connection linking the Stockport Canal trail north to Clayton Hall.
To further enhance the image of the area to passing traffic environment improvements should be made along Ashton New Road. These should include both landscape and streetscape improvements aimed at enhancing pedestrian routes and at greening the corridor over the long term.
The Stockport Canal Greenway affords an important pedestrian and recreational link south through East Manchester. Connecting this corridor with a completed and fully accessible Ashton Canal Corridor will create a continuous green connection from the Gorton reservoirs north to the Medlock Valley and west into the City Centre.
